Madonna di Campiglio

The Church of St. Maria Antica is the major historical attractions of Madonna di Campiglio. The current neo-Gothic building was built in place of a sanctuary, in turn, expansion of the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of a monastery and hospice. The latter was built by a certain Raymond around 1180, as stated in the letter from Beseno Conrad II, Bishop of Trent, which is the first written document on the site. The church was enriched by donations of the House of Austria, who was elected in Madonna di Campiglio summer residence: the pulpit and the confessional at the top of the aisle, bearing the name of Francis Joseph in German and in Italian, the lining of the walls of the choir , with figures of saints dear to the popular cult (St. Bartholomew, patron of the parish, and Charlemagne, often revered as a saint in the German dioceses), and some stained glass windows. Even most of the carved wooden pews were donated by wealthy patrons of the parish, including the Family Righi be noted, belongs to the founder of the city. The church contains two pieces of a certain artistic value, the antique Crucifix (twelfth century) in Nordic style, instead of the chancel arch, and the center of this triptych of the Madonna and Child with Saints attributed to the School of Teacher Narcissus, an important protagonist of the late Gothic painting and sculpture in South Tyrol. Next to that stands the ancient Church of St. Maria New, a modern building designed by architect Marcello Armani Trent (1970-72). The church was built in wood and granite as irregular shapes that recall the profile of the surrounding area in order to make it as possible in harmony with the mountain landscape. Within S. Maria Nuova, the space reserved for the faithful is circular and sloping toward the pulpit, baptistery are also worth mentioning the painting by Spanish painter and Angulo y Garcia, inspired by a sixteenth-century fresco located in Algeciras (Gibraltar).
