Piazza del Santo is the heart of artistic and religious traditions tied to one of the most famous and venerated saints of Italy: St. Anthony. On the first square is the Basilica with its majestic domes, the monument of Gattamelata, the school of St. Antonio, the Oratory of St. George and a sequence of old houses with arcades and shops. The equestrian statue of Gattamelata, leader of the Venetian Republic, is one of the masterpieces by Donatello (1453), while the oratory shows a remarkable cycle of frescoes dell'Altichiero (1379-1384). The School of the Holy, however, offers another cycle of frescoes dedicated to the life of St. Antonio, by various artists of the sixteenth-century Venetian school, including Titian. The basilica, called The Saint, was erected on the burial site of St. Antonio in the Romanesque-Gothic style between 1232 and 1350 approximately. The cover features eight domes, steeples and towers octagonal denounce French influences, Byzantine and Venetian architecture. The façade has a central door, four blind arches with pointed arches, a covered gallery, and a rosette at the top center. The three-nave interior is majestic and covered from the top galleries. The deep along the walls of the presbytery has 12 bas-reliefs by Andrea Bartolomeo Bellano and Brioso, while in the ambulatory is richly decorated with radiating chapels, the altar, instead, a series of bronzes by Donatello and, next, a candelabrum by Andrea Brioso, also the chapel of the Relics with treasure (with the language of the Holy Shrine). Among the many notable chapels, remember one of San Felice, in the right transept, with frescoes dell'Altichiero; the chapel of the Holy Ark, in the north transept, with a sixteenth-century reliefs on the walls, the precious altar and the ark . Also of note on the second pillar monuments dedicated to Cardinal Bembo, and the General Alessandro Contarini by Michele Sanmicheli. The beautiful cloisters, finally, are the thirteenth-fifteenth century. From the cloister of the Chapter you can reach the Presidency of the Council of the Ark where the famous fresco by Mantegna, followed by the cloister of the monastery and novitiate general with the nearby Anthony's rich library of incunabula.
