Called the heel of Italy, great Italian region, the territory size of large plains, low hills and broad plains, the Salento peninsula in Puglia extends beyond the Murge and the northern Adriatic with the impressive advances Tavoliere (a great plateau) and the promontory of Gargano. Here too, the prehistory and history have left their mark as well as any foreign invasion and domination (Saracen, Byzantine, Angevin, Swabian, Aragonese), but the baroque is the true original expression of the region (Lecce is the city most characteristic of this style).
